Ray Tracing Light Source and Shadows

The default light position is at the viewpoint. A different position can be set on the Ray Trace Light Source property page. The light source is independent of the source(s) used in the dynamic OpenGL plot. When Specify is checked on the property page, the light source position is given by the X, Y, and Z coordinates. The coordinates are either the Absolute position or give the Direction to the source that is located much further away. The Locate in 2D button hides the property sheet while the light source is positioned in a 2D plot; the sheet is shown when the left mouse button is released.

Non-default light positions can result in shadows. Shadows are shown by multiplying the intensity of pixels not in direct view of the light source by the shadow Intensity Reduction factor that is < 1. The ray tracing interpolation algorithm used in the Fine and Coarse modes recognize whether the pixels at the corners and center of the interpolation box are in shadow or not. As with other ray traced picture elements, the use of the Super interpolation mode will result in more well defined shadows.

Lights should not be placed within opaque objects. Moritz does not check if this is the case at present.
