
Overlapping Polygons
When two 3D polygons lie in the same plane, the resulting image is not well defined and flickering occurs as the model is rotated and moved. The left Figure below shows an example; the checkerboard-like pattern changes with the slightest movement of the image. Coplanar polygons occur often as a consequence of adjacent cells. Flickering is most evident when cut planes or other methods are used to view the interior of a model.
Two options available to reduce the occurrence of overlapping polygons---inner shell omission and shrinking---are described on the next pages. The shrinking option produced the Figure at right.
