Large Lattices
Very large lattices with many graphics elements, such as the model shown on this page, can impair performance of the 3D graphics display. In extreme cases, nothing or nothing recognizable is drawn. How much is very large depends on the particular computer and display hardware. The 3D Lattice Style property page contains an option for not drawing in 3D lattices with more than a specified number of elements. The graphics performance decreases as the number of 3D polygons grows.
The Universe dialog contains a number of settings that can be used to reduce the number polygons used when drawing a universe. The options can also be specified with the Universe commands. The settings can be applied to a single universe or to all lattice filling universes. One can choose to draw only the largest cylinder in a universe, omit endcaps and/or inner shells, use different tessellation parameters for cylinders and their endcaps, use a single line to represent the universe, or omit the universe entirely.
Two classes of these settings are available. The motion settings are in effect when the 3D image is rotated with the left mouse, zoomed or panned with the right mouse, or a clip plane is being positioned. Otherwise, the static settings are in effect. The use of the motion display styles is discussed here.
The 3D drawing is skipped if the 3D window is iconified; the polygonalization processing still takes place in that case.
