2D Cell Drawing Options

Solid FillCells are depicted in the 2D windows by filling, bounding, and outlining. Filling is accomplished by a ray tracing algorithm. Outlining uses the same algorithm to detect cell boundaries and color pixels interior to the cell edge. Bounding draws the portions of surfaces that enclose the cell as is done in the lower plot. Bounding can be restricted to material, rather than cell boundaries; this option is under development. Which methods are used and parameters affecting their appearance and performance are set on the Cell Style property page. Separate cell highlight settings are used to distinguish picked cells and, optionally, the current cell in the Cell property sheet.

Sparse FillThe Fill Factor determines how many pixels are colored when shading. When not every pixel is colored, a background bitmap remains visible. A factor of 1 results in a solid fill as in the plot at upper left. For factors N > 1, every Nth pixel is colored as in the plot to the right. Shading can take a while for complicated models. The Resolution value is how many rows are colored for each scan line calculated. Larger resolution factors result in quicker drawing but more jagged images.

The Outline Width is the number of pixels from the edge of the cell that are colored when outlining cells. All pixels within the width are colored regardless of the fill factor.

The Error Width is the size, in pixels, of the bars used in displaying geometry errors.

Cell ColorsCells can be colored with the individual cell colors or colored by material or importance. The same colors are used in 2D and 3D. The cell and importance colors are assigned by cycling through a list of cell or importance colors. These colors can be viewed and modified on the Cycle Colors property page. Once created, colors of individual cells can be changed from the Cell property page and the Component Colors property page.  The cell outline color is usually the fill color for the cell. The Cell Style page has an option to use a single color for the outlines regardless of the fill color.  When the color choice is by material, there is an option to color by cell if only a single material is present.

Cells can be labeled by the cell number, material number, importance value, or universe number. The Cell Style property page contains a button to change the font and font color used for the labels.

Cells and surfaces are not drawn in an iconified 2D window. Minimizing one or more of the 2D windows will speed up the total drawing time. During drawing, a popup appears showing which drawing action is taking place and inviting the user to press the Escape key to cancel the operation. In addition to the current drawing, the Escape key cancels drawing in any other windows that need to be redrawn.
